A 40 yard makes sense when metal comes off the floor every day rather than at the end of a job. Manufacturers, fabricators, and large demolition contractors are who runs one, and it usually sits on a schedule rather than being called in each time it fills.
This is the size where the account conversation matters most. We want to know what the material is, roughly how much of it there is a week, and where it can sit, because getting those three right is the difference between a container that disappears into the operation and one that is permanently in the way.
Space and access before it is delivered
Roughly about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 8 ft high, and the truck needs considerably more room than that again to back in, tip it off, and pull out. A 40 yard is the size most often turned away at delivery for access, so it is worth walking the spot before we come.
Check overhead too. Power lines, gutters, door canopies, and low branches all sit in the arc the box swings through as it comes off the rails, and none of them are visible on a site plan.

Not to the top. Dense steel reaches a legal road weight in a fraction of the space, so a 40 yard on heavy material would be hauled barely a quarter full. The 40 is for light, bulky scrap; heavy material belongs in a 10 or 20 yard.
Room for the container plus clear space behind and above it for the truck to back in and tip the box off the rails. Ground has to be firm and level, because soft ground and fresh asphalt do not hold up under a loaded 40 yard.
